Desk Update

Happy Sunday Morning!

We had Austin’s sister in town this weekend and had a great, slow weekend. On Saturday, the weather was perfect! We got up, grabbed coffee, and went to a couple of local shops. We decided to stop at Goodwill on the way home and found this cute antique desk for $40! I wish I would have taken pictures of us trying to fit this thing into our Toyota Corolla but lets just say that it was so bad, a stranger across the parking lot offered to take it to our house for us…

After our new friend dropped off our new desk, we decided to head to Home Depot to pick out a paint color. I am not a huge fan of painting real wood but this had so many scratches and dings on it, I knew it would be time-consuming to sand it down. I wasn’t a huge fan of the color of the stain either. We decided on a light grey – La Paloma Grey by Benjamin Moore. We got a quart of Behr Premium Plus in a flat finish. Chalk paint is expensive and when I try to put Plaster of Paris in flat paint, it always turns out horrible. So I have found if I just paint my furniture with a flat paint, it is very close to the same look as a chalk paint.

We also picked up 2 of these Venetian Bronze with Copper Highlights Pull’s to replace the single small knobs that were already on the desk. Austin drilled holes on the drawer faces for the new hardware and then I painted them.

Here is the desk after 2 coats of paint:

I finished the desk with one coat of Annie Sloan’s clear wax & here is the finished product!

I love how paint can make something look so different! We actually forgot to paint the middle section with all of the compartments BUT I am so glad we did! I love the contrast against the grey!

We put our new desk in our guest bedroom that doubles as Austin’s home office. He hasn’t loaded all of his stuff in it yet (probably better for the pictures), but this gives you an idea of where/how it will be used.

If you are wondering where the cute chair is from, it’s West Elm. We got it from the Asheville Outlets a couple of years ago and it worked perfectly for this desk. The little fiddle leaf fig plant beside the desk is from Home Depot. It actually is super easy to take care of! Side note – I need new curtains in this room BUT sometimes you just have to go with what you have until you can find yourself a DEAL. 🙂

Let me know if you have any questions! Have a great week!
